This project focused on using research to create an accurate proposal for a client. This project was broken up into different phases to help him learn the different parts needed for a proposal. The first phase of this project was about research. He needed to choose a site that we thought we would like to place an installation. Upon choosing the specific site, I then needed to research the history of the site and look into different topics or ideas that we could bring into the design. The site that I chose was Joe Moakley Park in Boston. After performing quite a bit of research, I found that there was a large link between community and climate within the park. The park was built to protect the community from climate change and the impacts that it has on the coast.
The next phase of the project was surrounding how to render typography in a 3D way that would be an accurate representation of the final installation. This way of rendering was performed in Adobe Illustrator with the 3D materials palette. I was encouraged by my professor to try out different things with a collection of different quotes, words, and phrases that he thought could be used for the installation. After playing with the 3D effects, I found that he thought that for my site, the best way to use typography would be by using a single word rather than a phrase. I thought that a single word would be the best use of monumental type rather than a long phrase.
Even with all of this thought process done, I still was not completely set on what I was going to create, and where I was going to place it in the park. The first thing that I focused on was what work I wanted to use. I spent a long time playing with different words and thinking about how the letters interact and would look as a final inspiration. In the end, the final word that I chose to use was “community” because the whole park focuses on community. After creating his installation, I then needed to determine where I wanted to place the installation within the park. I wanted it to be in a place where people would go, but since that are many different fields and events held at the park, I did not want the installation to get in the way. I found a nice grassy area by the edge of the park to place the installation. This was a great spot because it welcomed people into the park from the street, but also did not impede any individuals who were playing in the park. All in all, this project helped him to think about creating proposals and how to think through an installation.
