Branding a City
This project involved branding a city, creating a postcard, an email signature, and social media posts. The goal of this assignment is to work on branding and consistency for all aspects of a brand, which could be a location or a company.
Phase 1: Logo Design
During this phase of the project, our main focus was to make a logo that would serve as a good visual for the location that we were randomly assigned. We did a lot of research and created moodboards to determine what imagery we could bring into the design. For example, my town is Wallace, Idaho. This town is known as a historical town and was/is the silver capital of the world. I took this information so that I could make a logo that is well-connected to the town and has importance to the people of the town. It took me many different designs to get the design that I liked, and we were required to make at least three distinct logo designs.
These were the three style guides for my distinct logos. I ended up choosing the logo with the tower to be my logo.
Phase 2: Making a Brand
In this phase, we were given another person in the class's logo and had to design a postcard with this new logo, with the location's aesthetic, and imagery. The specific city that I was given was Greenport, NY. This town is known for fishing and being a very small town. I tried to follow this aesthetic with my entire brand in a postcard, email signature, and social media posts. The first piece that we were designing was the postcard, where we focused on putting the list text on the front and the paragraph text on the back. We also needed to find images that would be high resolution when printing. Then, when we were making the social media posts, we needed to make sure that our pictures followed a similar color palette and would unite all of the posts that we made. Lastly, we made an email signature where we needed to include the contact information for a person in the town and the logo. This project served as a gateway into the world of branding and how difficult it can be to keep everything in a brand unified, not just with the logo and type treatment, but also with the imagery. All of these parts of our brand were compiled into a style guide, which we ultimately turned in to our professor.
The finished style guide for Greenport, NY.
